So we thought we could just drive down from New Plymouth tot Wellington (200 km) in one day and get a room in Wellington, or at least one in the more scenic, smaller towns outside of town. Boy where we wrong! We had the bad luck to come to town the same day as AC/DC. Apperently when a big event like this happens in Wellington (like cricket match or a rock concert), everything from high class hotel to hole in the ground in a 50 km radius of Wellington will be fully booked well in advance. We found that out the hard way! Fucking AC/DC... We saw some fans on the way to wellington, in vans and SUV´s with AC/DC logos painted in their windsheelds (one even drew a dick on the side of his door) and once we got into wellington, we saw a sea of AC/DC shirts on the way to the stadium. Apperently 35.000 fans are going to the concert. And that means that realy everything in Wellington is booked with hard rockers. So after a straneous drive through town, in wich we feverishly searched for a place in vain, (but took in some of the sights of Wellington along the way) we widened our search outside of Wellington. But every town we visited was completely full, in most places we already saw people in AC/DC shirts on the Motel balconies from afar. Everywhere we looked No Vacancy. We were getting desperate and the sun was already setting, until we finaly found a little B&B 50KM outside of Wellington, in a small beach town called Paraparamui (Paraparam to locals).
A nice elderly widower runs the place he set up with his wife. Two well kept rooms with bathrooms. He also runs the Christmas shop/museum next door. Beautifuly located on a 50 acre landgood that includes a vegetable garden (he used to make his own jam) and a duck pond. Two dogs greeted us (don´t try to pet the big one, he doesn´t like to be touched, and all he does is bark) So after hearing the man´s life story we could have a well deserved beer at the local stake house. They sell the stake by size up to a kilo (!) A size that will even awestuck a Texan (according to our host)
